 We’ve all heard the horror stories about our meat: inhumane conditions, crippled and dying beef, questionable diets, hormones and antibiotics, cruel slaughtering practices, the list goes on. Jokes are made about what is actually in fast food burgers.

Did you know that our local 4-H kids raise meat animals and offer them for sale at the Ferry County Fair?

Kids in Ferry County look forward every summer to the arrival of the Missoula Children’s Theater. Whether they participate in the production or just watch for fun, it is always an enjoyable treat. This year, the Missoula Children’s Theater is celebrating its fortieth year, and again has brought fun and energy to Ferry County with its musical production of King Arthur’s Quest .

There is something remarkable about small town communities whose businesses are concerned with the health and welfare of their friends and neighbors. The strident commercialism and the severe competitiveness of a global economy rarely create a sense of community based on caring or trust. It is in appreciation of these special community values that the Ferry County Historical Society accepted the challenge as well as the responsibility of owning the J.W. Slagle residence that has been so graciously donated by the Slagle family.

Once in a while, past all the hoopla and hype found in the horse industry today, a person is lucky enough to find The Genuine Article. Luke Crosthwaite, a horse trainer who arrived in Ferry County in July to help develop and manage the 4C Ranch, is The Genuine Article, with an ability to reach across the divide between horse and human to achieve a partnership.

Republic gained a wonderful addition to the business community when Pioneer Books and Gifts opened in 2008. This store features new and used books as well as specialty gifts. When you step into the shop, which is situated across the street from the Northern Inn, you are met with a wonderful array of fairies, dragons, jewelry and artistic cards for all occasions.

As a new business owner, Cindy Milne brings some important observations to our community. When asked what brought her to Ferry County, Cindy explains it has been a long journey. She and her husband Allan were living in England when they found a book store inventory in Ferndale and bought it. They had come to Republic several times to visit their daughter and had fallen in love with the community, so they decided to move to the area and open a book store here.
