To the average person, success is accomplishing a goal, or achieving a dream. Some people can succeed on their own, but others need mentors to inspire them to have the confidence to achieve their goals. That is what the Curlew Job Corps is all about: encouraging students and helping them to have the confidence in themselves to successfully complete their two-year course and finish with educational skills, life skills, and vocational skills that will help them to be gainfully employed and able to live on their own.

It is one thing to achieve these goals when you have a stable life, but throw in adversities like broken families, poverty, and other societal woes, and the task seems almost impossible. With mentors like the many dedicated instructors and staff, who find their jobs at the Curlew Job Corps so rewarding, the impossible becomes a reality, as these students overcome obstacles and have a vision to finish.

The City of Republic has a new police officer on duty. Loren Culp was hired earlier this year and has just completed his training in Burien. Officer Culp and his wife Barbara have old ties to Republic. They both were in the Republic High School Class of 1979 and Barbara’s grandfather, Lloyd Daily was the Sheriff of Ferry County for many years in the sixties and seventies. Officer Culp was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army and served as a Combat Engineer with the 101st Airborne Division before running his own contracting business in the Olympia Area for over twenty years. “Officer Culp is a welcome addition to our city,” says Chief Ken Marcuson.

Cats and windows pose real health hazard to birds PDF Print E-mail

This column is about birds and that’s why I feel the need to write about cats this month. And about windows too. Did you know that cats and windows are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of millions of birds each year in the U.S. alone?

Free roaming cats—feral and domestic—are a serious conservation issue. Domestic “house cats” are good predators but they’re not natural predators. They are not, and have never been, part of the natural predation cycle anywhere. They were first domesticated in Egypt over 5000 years ago and didn’t appear in the United States until the 1800s. Now, highly modified from their ancestors, they are the most common household pet in our country, with an estimated population of more than 60 million living with and among us.

It’s harvest time. The fruits and veggies are ripe and plentiful. But does it matter which ones we eat?

Actually, all fruits and veggies are great. But the way they are grown and processed will make a difference in how much nutrition you get. And how many toxins you may inadvertently ingest.

10 students, nine from New York's Syracuse University and one from University of Texas, Austin, are spending 6 ½ weeks exploring veterans’ issues around Ferry and Okanogan counties from the end of May through the beginning of July.

The students, along with one professor, are reporting from a newsroom at the K-Diamond-K Guest Ranch in Republic and are currently working on stories in Republic, Tonasket, Chesaw, Oroville, Nespelem, and Coulee Dam. The reporters are exploring such veterans' issues as living in isolation, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, military suicide, VA benefits, military healthcare, the impact of war on women and families, and teens in the military.
