Building Lives One at a Time PDF Print E-mail
Written by Suzie Sage with John Cody

Having a passion to encourage and change young lives has been John Cody’s mission for over forty-five years. John retired from the Curlew Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center a little over a year ago. When asked to do this interview, John modestly replied, “Job Corps is about the students. If it weren’t for them, there wouldn’t be a Curlew Job Corps. I would like the article to be about the Curlew Job Corps and not me.” With that, John and I would like to give our readers a little history of the Curlew Job Corps CCC.

John had worked for the Forest Service in the summers during high school and college. After serving in the military, he came back to the Forest Service seeking employment. John applied for the Curlew Job Corps CCC program which was one of two new programs, and that was the beginning of his forty-five year journey at the center.

Safety cone helps feather all our nests PDF Print E-mail
Written by Susan Grzadzielewski

All that wondering I did last month about why a pair of ospreys would want an orange safety cone in their nest was for naught. It turns out a human put that cone up there. A pair of humans actually.

Ferry County PUD employees Jacob Burbank and Aaron Baldwin nailed the cone in place to keep the osprey nest from spreading onto the insulators—a potentially dangerous situation. If the sticks and branches that the ospreys were adding daily to their nest had created an arc, the nest could easily have caught on fire and spread to the pole. A fire on that particular pole, which houses what is called a double dead-end structure and carries 34,500 volts, would most likely result in a power outage for the entire north end of Ferry County.

"Dancers are born to be dancers. Dance and music live in their souls even before they are born. Nothing will stop them. Despite ridicule or censure, cultural boundaries or social restrictions, ill health or injury--they will dance. They are God’s pupil, and dance they will, as their teacher demands.”

Once in a while, a person is lucky enough to spend life doing what he or she loves and calling it work. Ne-Kajira Jannan, former director of the Amaal Dance Ensemble and Theatre and recent transplant to Ferry County, has been teaching, performing, choreographing, and directing dance productions and dinner theatre for over 30 years throughout the Northwest. A Master Class presenter, she’s taught workshops and classes in numerous disciplines, and developed a movement vocabulary and teaching program used by dancers today. Throughout the past three years, she has taught folkdance, folkloric and fusion bellydance classes in Ferry County.

The first thing you notice about Jennifer Miller is her smile. Then you notice the enthusiasm. That smile, and that enthusiasm, is part of what keeps bringing people back to Flowers Et Cetera on Clark Street in Republic. When you enter or call the shop you immediately feel a sense of welcome.

Politics interfering in relationship PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ferry Godmother

Dear Ferry Godmother,

I have been in a relationship with my boyfriend for 2 1/2 years. We have had our share of difficulties, but worked through most of them over time, in fact becoming closer as we work through the struggles. Lately, our very different political views seem to have driven a wedge between us. It’s hard to believe that this has happened, but I feel we are losing respect for each other as well as our sense of intimacy and love. How can we learn to have a mutual respect for our different political opinions while not compromising what each truly believes?

Sincerely,

Lover of Conservatives and Liberals
