Students from Curlew and Republic will compete in the Washington High School Equestrian Teams State Meet May 14-16. Curlew Equestrian Team members Cheyenne Saltsman, Danni Marcin, Marcella Lane, Brianna Brown and Ashley Brown will travel to Appleatchee Riders equestrian complex in Wenatchee to enter a variety of team and individual events.
The Curlew Equestrian Team is a cooperative effort between Curlew and Republic High Schools, and is in its third year of competition. The group sent team members to the annual state meet every year since its inception in 2008, and will again vie for titles in individual events such as barrels, poles, and Idaho figure 8, plus team events like birangle, working fours drill and team sorting.

What’s the life expectancy for hummingbirds? How long and how far is their migration? What foods could they possibly find to eat this far north right now? I sought answers to these, and other questions, as April 20th approached.
According to my past “refrigerator lists”—my yearly lists of bird species and the dates on which I first observed them—a male Calliope Hummingbird had first appeared on April 20th for the past two years in a row. Would he show up again, I wondered. And if he did, could it actually be the same bird making his way up from Central Mexico for a third straight year?

Artie McRae, 14-year veteran of the U.S. Postal Service, was recently promoted to Postmaster of the Republic office.
Artie started out as a window clerk working part-time between Kettle Falls and Republic. She was assigned to Republic full-time four years ago, when Diane Hewitt was appointed Postmaster at Danville. She has held the position of “On the Job Instructor for Clerks," and was appointed Officer in Charge two years ago to fill in during Postmaster Therall Pugliese’s absence. After Therall officially retired, Artie applied for the Postmaster position. The postal service interviewed nine candidates, awarding the position to McRae the last week of April.

The community of Pine Grove has experienced water problems for several years. When a recent series of water quality tests came back with red flags, it meant something had to be done. For a community the size of Pine Grove, purchasing a new system was not an option. Tom Justus of the Washington State Health Department, working with the Pine Grove Water Association and the City of Republic, set out to find a safe and affordable solution.
